About the Tasmanian Leaders Program

The Tasmanian Leaders Program is a respected ten-month leadership development experience delivered across Tasmania from February to November.

Participants take part in 25 days of immersive learning through residential retreats, linking sessions, executive coaching, networking events and a Community Action Project.

The program is designed for established and aspiring leaders who want to broaden their perspectives, strengthen their leadership capability and contribute more effectively to their organisations, sectors and communities.

Each year, up to 24 participants are selected through a competitive application process. Cohorts are intentionally diverse, bringing together people from business, government and community organisations, as well as different regions, backgrounds and areas of experience.

The program aims to:

  • Broaden perspectives through exposure to diverse people, places and ideas.
  • Build meaningful relationships across business, government and community.
  • Strengthen organisations through practical leadership development and cross-sector collaboration.
  • Challenge participants to think beyond the boundaries of their own role, organisation or sector.
  • Create positive community impact through collaborative Community Action Projects.

What you will develop

The Tasmanian Leaders Program is designed to build practical leadership capability. Throughout the year, participants develop skills across three interconnected areas of leadership growth: Insight, Influence and Impact.

Together, these capabilities help participants strengthen how they understand themselves and others, work with complexity, collaborate across difference and create positive impact in their organisations, communities and across Tasmania.

Insight

Insight is about developing a deeper understanding of yourself, other people and the world around you.

Throughout the program you will strengthen your self-awareness, broaden your perspective, think more strategically and become clearer about your role as a leader.

Influence

Influence focuses on working effectively with and through other people.

You will build stronger relationships, communicate with confidence, collaborate across different perspectives and develop practical approaches for leading through complexity and uncertainty.

Impact

Impact is about applying your leadership beyond yourself.

You will develop the confidence to motivate others, contribute to your organisation and community, strengthen your connection to Tasmania and create meaningful change through action.

These capabilities are developed through a combination of immersive learning experiences, executive coaching, collaborative projects and practical application throughout the program.

How the program works

The Tasmanian Leaders Program is delivered over ten months through a combination of immersive learning experiences, executive coaching, networking and practical application.

Together, these elements provide opportunities to learn, reflect, build relationships and apply new skills in real-world settings.

Residentials

Three immersive, multi-day residential retreats form the foundation of the program.

Led by experienced facilitators and held in regional Tasmania, these retreats focus on developing core leadership capability while providing space for reflection, connection and personal growth.

Linking sessions

Seven Linking Sessions explore the opportunities and challenges shaping Tasmania’s future.

Participants hear from experts, community leaders, industry representatives and people with lived experience, gaining new perspectives while exploring complex issues that affect the state.

In 2027, three session topics will be selected by Tasmanian Leaders. The remaining four topics will be chosen by participants, allowing each cohort to help shape its own learning experience.

Executive coaching

Two one-on-one coaching sessions with experienced executive coaches support participants to reflect on their learning, set goals and embed new leadership practices throughout the year.

Community Action Projects

Working in small groups, participants design and deliver a Community Action Project that responds to a real need or opportunity in Tasmania.

These projects provide practical experience applying leadership skills while creating positive outcomes for organisations, communities and the state.

Networking and graduation

Throughout the program, participants connect with members of the Tasmanian Leaders Network through dedicated networking events, culminating in a formal graduation and ongoing membership of the network.

2027 dates and commitment

The Tasmanian Leaders Program runs from February to November 2027. Successful applicants are expected to attend and actively participate in all program sessions, including Residentials, Linking Sessions and networking events.

  • Linking Session 5 – Friday 20 August – Saturday 21 August, Launceston
  • Linking Session 6 – Friday 17 September – Saturday 18 September, Hobart

Before you apply

  • Attendance at all Residentials and Linking Sessions is expected.
  • Program days are typically full days and may include evening activities during Residentials.
  • Participants are responsible for arranging and funding their own travel and accommodation for Linking Sessions where required.

Fees, inclusions and scholarships

The total program fee for the 2027 Tasmanian Leaders Program is $9,960 (including GST). The cost is shared between participants and their employers or sponsors to demonstrate a shared commitment to the program.

Fee breakdown

  • Participant contribution = $1,430, $600 on acceptance in 2026, balance before the first Residential (January–February 2027)
  • Employer or sponsor contribution = $8,530, Before 30 January 2027
  • Total program fee = $9,960

What is included?

Participants receive:

  • 25 days of structured leadership development
  • Seven nights of accommodation during the three Residentials
  • Two one-on-one executive coaching sessions
  • Leadership resources and program materials
  • Tickets for you, your employer and a guest to attend three networking events
  • Four tickets to the formal graduation celebration

What is not included?

Participants are responsible for:

  • Travel to and from Residentials and Linking Sessions
  • Accommodation for Linking Sessions where required

Scholarships

Tasmanian Leaders is committed to ensuring there are no unnecessary financial barriers to participation.

A range of scholarships is available to help individuals and organisations cover all or part of the program fee, depending on the priorities of scholarship partners.

In exceptional circumstances, the Board of Tasmanian Leaders may provide a fee discount for successful applicants who are not eligible for a scholarship and are unable to afford the program fees. Please contact us to discuss your circumstances.

How to apply

Applications for the 2027 Tasmanian Leaders Program are completed online.

You can save your application and return to it at any time, so we encourage you to start early and complete it over multiple sessions if needed.

Who should apply?

You may be a good fit for the program if you:

  • Are an established or aspiring leader with at least five years’ relevant experience.
  • Have demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to continued growth.
  • Are ready to contribute at a senior level within your organisation or community.
  • Want to make a meaningful contribution to Tasmania’s future.
  • Can commit the time and energy required to participate fully in the program.
  • Have the support of your employer or business.
  • Are committed to ongoing involvement with the Tasmanian Leaders Network after graduation.

Selection process

Applications are assessed on merit through a competitive selection process.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in an online interview before the final cohort is selected.

A maximum of 24 participants will be offered places in the 2027 program

  • Information Session 1 – Wednesday 12 August, 12.30 pm–1.30 pm
  • Information Session 2 – Tuesday 1 September, 5.00 pm–6.00 pm
  • Applications close – Thursday 1 October, 12.00 noon
  • Online interviews – Monday 26 – Wednesday 28 October
  • Successful applicants notified – Mid-December 2026

Whether you are considering applying or supporting someone to participate, here are answers to some of the questions we are most frequently asked.

What kind of people are you looking for?

Each program includes up to 24 participants selected to create a diverse cohort from across business, government and community. Participants bring a broad range of experiences, perspectives and backgrounds, creating rich opportunities to learn from one another as well as from the program itself.

I am self-employed or currently unemployed. Can I still apply?

Yes. Applications are welcomed from self-employed and unemployed applicants.

Can more than one person from my organisation apply?

Yes. Multiple people from the same organisation may apply. Each application is assessed on its own merit, alongside the overall diversity of the participant cohort.

I have applied before. Can I apply again?

Absolutely. Many strong applicants reapply successfully in subsequent years. We encourage you to apply again if you were not selected previously.

Are there assignments or exams?

No. The program uses an action learning approach rather than traditional assessment. Participants complete readings, reflections and collaborative activities throughout the year and work together on a Community Action Project.

What is Action Learning?

Action Learning is a practical approach to learning through experience, reflection and application. Participants work in small Learning Sets to support one another, explore challenges and apply new insights throughout the program.

What is a Community Action Project?

Working in Learning Sets, participants design and deliver a collaborative project that responds to an issue relevant to Tasmania’s future. These projects provide opportunities to apply learning while making a meaningful contribution.

Does the program use any diagnostics?

Yes. Participants may use a range of leadership and communication diagnostics throughout the program to deepen self-awareness and support their learning.

What if my employer cannot fund the employer contribution?

You can still apply. Some participants self-fund all or part of their participation and negotiate leave arrangements with their employer. Flexible payment options may also be available. Please contact us to discuss your circumstances.

I am self-employed. Who pays the employer contribution?

For self-employed participants, the business is generally regarded as the employer. Flexible payment arrangements may be available depending on your circumstances.
